Foundation of the Relief Society

A painting by Walter Rane illustrating Joseph Smith standing and holding a book while speaking to a large group of women sitting on chairs. When the church was organized, God commanded Joseph to also gather the sisters in their own society in order to support and strengthen everyone around them. This is where the Relief Society came from. During their first meeting, everyone sustained Emma Smith to be the first Relief Society President.
The purpose of this society of women was to serve their fellow saints and neighbors as well as to help develop faith in Christ within themselves and to support the growth of other's faith. The overall theme of Relief society has been "Charity Never Faileth." This society has continued in these goals and motivations through today and is now the longest running women's organization in the world.
Just as in Biblical times, Jesus Christ recognizes the importance and significance of women in every person's life. Although women are not always given a central role that is described in the Savior's life, he still had women that were around him often acting as his disciples just as the apostles did.
