Joseph Smith

A portrait by Alvin Gittins of Joseph Smith in a white shirt and brown suit, holding sheets of paper, with his hand on his side.Joseph Smith was born in Sharon, Vermont on 23 December 1805. He grew up in the New England area moving from Vermont to New York to Pennsylvania. His family had always been religious, as they read the Bible daily, but they were all divided in understanding which was the correct church to join. Joseph wanted to know the truth and so he prayed and asked God to know what church to join. It was that prayer that he experiences the First Vision. Joseph was then lead by God and Jesus Christ to restore the church to the earth once again.
Great opposition came against Joseph Smith as he followed God's counsel and did his best to be a righteous disciple of Jesus Christ. There were many people who did not like the idea of Joseph Smith translating what some called, "a gold bible." But in reality, Joseph was a humble farm boy who wanted to understand and share the truth that he found. Through each moment of opposition (starting as early as when he was a young boy after having the First Vision) God supported him to endure the trials.
From all of these experiences, Joseph Smith played the largest role in the beginning of the restoration of the church, many even know him as the Prophet of the Restoration. From Joseph's example of faith in Jesus Christ, we can each understand that our faith and our beliefs must be centered as Jesus Christ as our Savior and Redeemer of the world. We acknowledge Joseph Smith as a prophet of God, just as Moses and Noah were prophets during their time.
