Restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood

A painting by Kenneth Riley of Joseph Smith kneeling in a grove of trees and receiving the Melchizedek Priesthood through Peter, James, and John, with Oliver Cowdery nearby. After Joseph and Oliver's recent experience with John the Baptist and receiving the Aaronic Priesthood, they soon returned to the Susquehanna River and inquired of the Lord again. This time, they wanted to know how to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
After receiving the instruction they did from John the Baptist, they know that not all of the priesthood authority that was available was restored yet.
When they returned to the previous area they had received the Aaronic Priesthood at, they were visited by resurrected being again, but this time it was Peter, James and John (three of Christ's apostles). These three then taught Joseph and Oliver about the Melchizedek Priesthood and how it was the higher of the priesthoods.
Once they established the basic meaning and understanding if it, they ordained Joseph then Oliver to the Melchizedek Priesthood (but they had still not restored all the Priesthood keys that would someday be available to them specifically).
This restoration of the Melchizedek Priesthood made it possible for Joseph and Oliver to give the gift of the Holy Ghost to those who have been                                                                                          baptized by the priesthood authority of God.
